The picturesque hills of the Quantocks are home to several point to point trainers including Louise Cabble and I visited her to get her plans for the forthcoming season.

A couple of miles from Teresa Clark's yard, lies the impressive yard and training facilities of Louise Cabble. Louise spent her time learning under the tutelage of local trainers, Chrissie & Carroll Gray and Kevin Bishop. Partner Tony Fear has had horses with Paul Nicholls for several years and Louise has combined training pointers with pre-training for friends. They also breed, with mares such as No Need For Alarm who won 7 races for them before they sold her. Deciding it might be worth buying her back to breed from when she finished racing, they tracked her down and this resulted in the talented Master Tommytucker, an impressive dual winner at Exeter last season before injuring himself last month at Chepstow and earning a spell on the sidelines.   They also have her unraced daughter Rising Bell who is the dam of Just Tara who they will run this season.

Louise now has her Permit to train under Rules so she can only train her own point to pointers. Those for other owners, will be trained by her partner, Tony Fear but they will be grouped together here.

Roseyroo - this 11 year old mare who has won four times, will return to point to pointing this season having been unlucky to unseat at Cheltenham on her only start last season when in the process of running well. She is still qualified to run in an Intermediate and has never contested an Open race so there are plenty of options open for her. Louise feels she is ground dependent so will wait for “proper” winter ground.

Just Tara is a home-bred by Kayf Tara and closely related to the useful Master Tommytucker. She went to Fergal O’Brien’s yard with the intention of running in a bumper but sustained a small injury so she has returned home and she will run pointing this season. A nice athletic mare, her trainer is looking forward to getting her on a racecourse.

Hot Lick is a 4 year old by Phoenix Reach who was bought out of Dan Skelton’s yard having previously run on the Flat for Andrew Balding. He has needed some time to fill out his frame and the hope is that he will run pointing before going back under rules.

Foynes Island is owned by Mike and Naomi Roe in partnership with Tony Fear. He has had some time off through injury but is back cantering and looking forward to getting him back out in the pointing field. He will then be aimed at the same 2.5 mile Hunter Chase at Cheltenham in which he was a brilliant neck second to Big Fella Thanks two seasons ago.

The Minkle, a 7 year old maiden by Flemensfirth, is owned by Doone Hulse. Initially just in the yard for pre-training, he has needed plenty of time and his owner made the decision to keep him there with the option to go pointing in the New Year. He will run in the same colours as talented former Haldon Gold Cup winner, Sir Valentino.

Jay Tidball who was formerly with Philip Hobbs is now working full time in the yard and will be the stable jockey having recently got his Category A Licence.
