The first of two scheduled meetings takes place at Cotley near Chard on Mothering Sunday when the Cotley hold their annual meeting. The course has been well prepared and following eight millimetres of rain on Friday night the latest going report is good. There will be the usual trade stands , food and drink outlets, children’s attractions,  bar and the bookmakers to have a bet with  and a Hound parade. Entry costs are £15 per person with under 16s free and dogs on a short lead welcome.

The meeting begins with the Barleymows Farm Shop sponsored Restricted race. A very competitive entry of 14 horses have been entered for this race headed by the impressive Larkhill winner Snap Fish trained by Harry Ryall. Not at his best at Charlton Horethorne he should be suited by this course and a repeat of his Larkhill run may be good enough. Of his rivals Noble Blue and Impakt St Georges both from Josh Newman’s stable may be his main rivals. Noble Blue was a close third at Charlton Horethorne having won his two previous races in some style. The ex Irish Kakadu Park was pulled up on his English debut at Buckfastleigh and improvement would be expected from this. Jewel in The Park won at Milborne St Andrew and then finished second at Charlton Horethorne. Boys Will be Boys holds an entry at Larkhill but if  this race is chosen he has place chances.

The Mens Open race sponsored by Greenslade Taylor Hunt has a small but select entry with all of the entries boasting recent form. Dr Rhythm won at his beloved Badbury Rings and is in good form but will need to be to hold off the choice of Harry Ryall’s entries namely Acey Milan, Another Furlough and Norton Hill who holds an entry at Larkhill. Walk In The Wild won a match at Ston Easton but this will be tougher. Dr Rhythm is selected to continue his fine run of form.

The Maiden Conditions race sponsored by Bearnes Hampton and Littlewood contains two entries from Luke Price who rarely leaves Cotley without at least one winner. He is potentially represented by Fifty Shadesof Bay who was placed several times last season and Scoro already placed this season. His choice should be respected. Blazing Litten was an encouraging second at Charlton Horethorne and this Linda’s Lad gelding looks the one to beat. King James has just arrived in England and as he is trained by Joe Hill he should be on the short list.

The Ladies Open over the shorter trip of two miles furlongs sponsored by Carter Jonas is a potential meeting of Paloma Blue the winner of a Larkhill Conditions race for Josh Newman and Walkin Out the runner up in a recent Ludlow Hunter Chase. Soldier of Destiny is another to consider as this former classy chaser for Jamie Snowden had a pipe opener in his Hunt race at Chipley Park and will appreciate the shorter distance. Walkin Out is chosen to resume her winning ways.

The PPORA Conditions Race sponsored by Symonds and Sampson may give Scoresby a chance to make up for his last fence blunder at Badbury Rings when he had the race at his mercy. His rider Robbie David will be keen to put that unseat out of his memory. Lavorante has already won his Hunt race this season and this gelding is seeking a fifth consecutive victory. Didero Vallis was held by the easy winner at Buckfastleigh and he has  place chances again. Shanroe Smooch was runner up at Milborne St Andrew and is another who ought to give a bold show, Scoresby is the choice.

The closing Maiden race sponsored by A J Wakely and Sons looks an open race with Luke Price’s two entries to be considered. Elle Est Beau has been placed for Dan Skelton and it would no surprise if Luke registers a number of victories with this Walk In The Park gelding. Barncroft previously with Fergal O’Brien has already had one race for Luke and should have come on for that outing. Buddah Castle from Josh Newman’s stable was third on his race debut at Charlton Horethorne and is another who should improve for that run. Both Chief O’Hara and King James have yet to make their English debuts for Chris Barber and Joe Hill respectively and these ex Irish pointers should be watched with interest. Lucarne was runner up at Larkhill and this home bred mare is getting closer to winning a race. Buddah Castle is a tentative selection.
