Brief Biography

ROBERT ALNER (1943–2020) was a dairy farmer in the Portman country to the east of Hazelbury Bryan at the foot of Bulbarrow Hill. Having acquired a love of horse racing at school, he excelled as a rider on the local P-t-P circuit and was a successful amateur rider under NH rules. With little previous experience he began training his own horses and proved to have a prodigious talent, becoming a top licenced trainer and winning the sport’s most prestigious races. He did all this without ever moving from the house where he was born but in an instant he was rendered totally paralysed in a motor accident in 2007. His mind and spirit remained intact and with uncomplaining stoicism he continued to play an important part in the running of the stable and to live as full a life as possible until his death on 3 February 2020.
