The wet weather continues to impact on the Southwest point to point scene and following the postponement of the planned meeting at Chipley last Sunday the scheduled fixture at Milborne St Andrew has received a bumper entry of 118 horses for its card. The South Dorset meeting is always one that attracts a good entry and a large crowd and this year’s renewal is likely to be no exception. As a consequence of the large entry the first race has been split and with the approval of the relevant authorities this has now been divided into a race for 4 and 5 year olds Maidens followed by a race for 6 year old Maidens with the first race now brought forward to 11.00am.  In addition to the racing there will be trade stands to browse, food and drink outlets and the bookmakers to have a bet with. The latest going report is Good to soft, soft in places with more rain due to fall before Sunday.

Entry costs are £12.50 for early bird tickets up till 30th January through gbpointing.co.uk and then £15 on the day with under 16s admitted free with an adult. Postcode for the course is BH20 7JN and w3w is shocking.officers.alleyway

The feature race is the Mixed Open race for which the total prize money is £1500 with £1000 to the winner sponsored by Alec Jarrett Limited and the Frampton Family.  A very competitive entry of sixteen horses has been received headed by the Josh Newman trained pair of Al Gasparo and Beacon Edge  owned by John and Floss Symes. The first named ex Gavin Cromwell winning hurdler made a striking impression when easily beating Punches Cross at Wadebridge and he will be strongly fancied to continue his winning ways. His stablemate Beacon Edge also won at Wadebridge and this former classy hurdler should be considered if he is the stable choice. Of their potential opponents one is Famous Clermont the winner of the Aintree 2023 Foxhunters who should have come on for his seasonal debut at Larkhill in November. Midnight River has already given Bridget Skelton her first training success and he comes into calculations. Crawter improved with each run last season and he is another who should have improved after his last run at Larkhill. Al Gasparo is the choice.

The meeting now begins with a four- and five-year-old Maiden over two and a half miles. There are a number of promising sorts amongst the sixteen strong entry with representatives from the leading stables of Chris Barber, Will Biddick, Gina Andrews and Tom Lacey to be considered. Chris has 3 entries including the James Drummond owned Skeeter Rock placed on his only outing in Ireland last May. Will relies on the unraced Strictly Commercial who is a half brother to Fern Hill and numerous other winners. Gina has two entries with L’Hybris is Born placed at Chaddesley Corbett looking her best chance of a winner. Tom Lacey always does well with his young charges and Hive Runner out of a winning point to point Mahler mare can take advantage of the weight allowance as a four year old receives. Well This Won’t Do won a Larkhill Bumper and her racing experience could be useful. A chance is taken with Hive Runner.

The 6-year-old Maiden over two and a half miles has an entry of sixteen horses headed by Dallanstown trained by Will Biddick and runner up at Dunsmore and it would be no surprise if he went one better. Diamond Appeal was placed at Chaddesley Corbett and will be better for that outing. Luca Morgan and Hannah Marshall both introduce ex Irish  placed geldings in the form of Prince in the Park and Protect the Future and they should both be considered. Fran Nimmo has acquired the ex-Tom Symons trained Quinn’s Reward and his chasing debut is worth noting. Southgate Avenue has had plenty of experience over hurdles in Ireland and now with Liam Corcoran he has the interesting jockey booking of Ed Vaughan. Dallanstown is the choice.

The Hunt Race looks to be between the in form Corporal Jackjones trained by Poppy Skipper and Scoresby trained by Harry Ryall who will be making his seasonal debut. Corporal Jackjones was game when  winning at Larkhill and he will take some beating. Catch Me Quick is progressive and might trouble both of the leading players. Corporal Jackjones is the selection.

The Maiden for seven-year-olds and upwards has attracted a strong entry of eighteen horses. Celtic Harmony trained by Tim Vaughan was placed in a Maiden at Didmarton and a repeat of that form may be good enough. Maidens trained by Luke Price should always be considered and Galudon placed on his only outing last season may come into the reckoning. Myfanwy’s Magic out of the prolific Lady Myfanwy was placed over Hurdles for Martin Keighley and now with Claire Hart is of interest. Priceforlove was placed at Badbury in November but was pulled up on his last outing. Celtic Harmony is the choice.

The Restricted race looks full of promising sorts with many bringing recent winning form to the race. Couer D’Alene looked the winner at Chaddesley Corbett until unseating his rider and he will be seeking compensation. Far Out West improved for each of her outings last season and she will be in the mix. Dorset Diamond has good place form this season including a Hunter Chase at Taunton. Follow My Order made all to win a Maiden at Larkhill whereas Dawn Supreme was runner up at the same meeting in a strong Restricted race. Posh Chick won her only race last season but was pulled up on her debut at Lower Machen. Jongleur D’Ainay won his Restricted at Lower Machen and may be the one to chase home Couer D’Alene. Woodstock Octo created a good impression when winning at Dunsmore whereas Up Killoughey won two races last season. Couer D’Alene is narrowly preferred.

The concluding race , the Countryside Alliance or PPORA Club Members Conditions race has attracted the highest entry of 24 horses. Noble Blue has been most impressive in his two wins this season and he will be hard to beat. Hidden Heroics has won both his races for his novice rider Henry Neale at Wadebridge and it will be fascinating to see how he copes with this different course. Midnight River holds an entry in this race and this may be an easier option rather than the Mixed Open. Arctic Oscar is the entry from Gina Andrews stable but he has not been out for nearly twelve months. Punches Cross runs well at Milborne and certainly has place possibilities. Minella Jab is another winner from Wadebridge and he beat a good rival in Clondaw Drake. Noble Blue is the selection with Minella Jab the sporting option.
