Preview

The first Wessex meeting of 2026 takes place at Larkhill on Sunday with the running of the Larkhill Racing Club meeting. Having lost the meeting in 2025 it is to be hoped that the weather allows this year’s event to go ahead and with an entry across the six scheduled races of 96 horses an excellent afternoon is in prospect at the Wiltshire course. With the first race scheduled at 12 noon the course is in great shape after the two previous meetings with the current going reported as good. The bends have been moved inwards since the last meeting and the racing line has been ring rolled.

There will be plenty of food options available, fresh coffee, bars and trade stands plus the Bookmakers to have a bet with. Entrance cost is £15 per person if booked online before 6.00pm on 2nd January at gbpointing.co.uk and £20 per person at the gate with under 16s free. Located 5 miles N of Amesbury and signposted off A345 and from the West off A 303.  What3Words///tubes.driveway.conquests. Postcode SP4 9QR.

The feature race, The Mixed Open was won in 2023 by Viroflay who was successful in a Handicap Chase at Kempton over the Christmas period. The likely winner of this year’s renewal is the prolific Grace A Vous Enki who will be seeking his ninth successive victory at Larkhill and was an emphatic winner for his new trainer Chris Barber at the last meeting in December. It will take an excellent effort from one of his sixteen potential rivals to lower his colours at his favourite course. Of these the two locally trained pair of Crawter and Douglas Longbottom look the biggest threats. Crawter improved as last season progressed and culminated in a victory for connections at the Hunter Chase evening at Cheltenham. Douglas Longbottom ought to appreciate the longer trip as he was making up ground late on at the November meeting and with a run under his belt looks the main danger. Others to consider are Myth Buster already a winner at the course this season for Lily Bradstock and Quintin’s Man who ought to have come on for his seasonal debut in December. Grace A Vous Enki is the selection.

The meeting begins with a competitive looking Conditions race for which twenty horses have been entered. Learntalot who does hold an entry in the Mixed Open looks one for the short list following his seasonal debut at Charing as does Highstakesplayer who was a close third on his seasonal debut at Larkhill and should improve and Imperial Esprit who was fourth at the course in November. Rachel Bartlett’s Dorset Diamond defied his odds to be the runner up to Grace A Vous Enki and a repeat of that run would certainly give him every chance. The mare All Loved Up has form at the course but she may need this outing. Mulberry Hill, Rocky Creed and Skandiburg all have place form this season and have each way chances. Highstakesplayer is a tentative selection.

The five-year-old and over Maiden race has received an entry of eighteen horses where Farfromaway trained by Fran Poste will be looking to improve on his debut at Dunsmore where he finished fourth (with Follow My Order in fifth). Winding Lake was a promising runner up at Badbury and this well related mare trained by Will Biddick is one to consider. Chris Barber’s maidens are always worth following and the ex-Tom Lacey Walkingtheline has place form in Bumpers and Hurdles. Weston Bay ran well at Cothelstone and has each way chances. Myfanwy’s Magic was placed over Hurdles for Martin Keighley and if he has a proportion of the talent of his dam Lady Myfanwy he ought to be in the mix. Farfromaway is chosen to beat Winding Lake

The Restricted race looks a competitive race with the easy winner from Chris Barber’s stable Carrillo from the December meeting opposing Dorset Dazzler already the winner of two races at Larkhill this season. The weight difference in favour of Carrillo may be telling. Sambo Mambo the winner of a Maiden for Chris Barber at Badbury Rings  is now with Nicky Sheppard and will be interesting to see how she runs from her new stable. Ultimate Survivor was runner up to Dorset Dazzler on his seasonal debut and connections will be looking to overturn that result. Impakt St Georges won his Maiden at Larkhill last season and has already won a Restricted at Wadebridge. Tourmaline won at the last meeting and is clearly on the upgrade. Carrillo is selected to follow up his first victory.

The Hands and Heels race sponsored by the Jockey Club and the Point-to-Point Authority is the first in a series of 10 races across the country for Novice Riders who started the season with less than 10 wins to their name. More information about the series can be found on GB Pointing website = gbpointing.co.uk. Although it is intended that whips will only be used in limited circumstances safety is not comprised. Famous Clermont brings the best form but his seasonal debut where he finished fourth over two and a half miles was disappointing but with the booking of Fred Philipson-Stow he probably is likely to start favourite. Highstakesplayer holds an entry in this race and he must have strong chances. Fighter Allen won two races for David Pipe when ridden by Rian Corcoran and is now with Edward Walker. Ryans Fancy was runner up to IK Brunel last season and a repeat of that form would give him a chance of his ninth career victory. Canastero ran well on his last outing and is likely to give his rider Ashley Dascombe another good ride. If Highstakesplayer opts for this race he is the choice but, in his absence, an each way selection is Ryans Fancy

The concluding Maiden race may be won by Cue Jump whose third behind Carrillo at the last meeting may have  already been franked after the Restricted race. Dollanstown was runner up at Dunsmore and should improve for that run. Queen Record was placed for Josh Newman last season and is now in the capable hands of local trainer Harriet Waight. Riskamatriark has place form as does Kow Boy Sivola and both have each way chances. Cue Jump is the choice.
