Report

We were excited that at last the Open Finals were here, and that Cattistock Hunt had agreed to hold them.

Unfortunately the rain came just as were beginning the first race. We had a false start in the 138cms & under race and it took some jockeys a little time to pull up.  When we did finally start the race, we were treated to a good race, with Ninfield Millionaires Delight and Harry Cobden getting the better of Sophie Hodges and Wee Antony into 2nd place & Megan Nicholls on Angelic in 3rd.

The 148 Race was very exciting with all the runners bunched together going away down the hill.  Harry Cobden on Calypso went into the lead coming back up the hill but he was beaten into 2nd place by Hugo Hunt on Jack Sparrow who waited until the home straight before making his move.  Vicky Merriman on Qwertyiuop was 3rd with Sophia Stainer on Come On Josey in 3rd.

We are very lucky to have area sponsorship from Richard & Dawn Prince, Paul Nicholls Racing & Wessex Bookmakers enabling the jockeys to have lots of prizes and coats for awards at the final.

Our last race of the season is the novice final at Weston & Banwell Harriers on May 18th, hope to see some of you there.

Report

Today turned out to be a really hot sunny day, but that didn't take away the excitement of two competitive races.

In the 138 we only had 4 runners - they started at the usual point to point start with the uphill run to the finish. Milly with Hattie Heal and Ravara Super Ted and Anna Wootton, who comes from the Devon & Cornwall Area, took up the running with the other two tucked in behind, it soon became clear when Christopher Gregory on Wee Anthony came up beside the two front runners that this was going to be an exciting finish.  With all three coming round the bend it was a close call but having played the waiting game, Christopher on Wee Anthony streaked ahead to win with Hattie on Milly second and Anna on Ravara Super Ted a good third.

The 148 race proved to be just as exciting even with four runners; they started at the 2m4f start, Harry Cobden on Calypso took the lead setting a good pace with them all being strung out going down the hill. As they came up the hill they started to bunch up behind Calypso, with Pippa Glanville on Petite Pois another visitor from the Devon & Cornwall Area and Vicky Merriman on Qwertyiuop starting to come up sides Harry on Calypso.  Pippa on Petite Pois came up the home straight neck & neck, with Pippa being the eventual winner, Harry on Calypso second and Vicky Merriman on Qwertyiuop third.

Report

The morning started dry with a little sun but as the morning progressed the rain came with the course walk being when the rain was at its worst so we had some very wet children.

Again the entries were low but we did have 2 good races. In the 138 race, Ninfield Millionaires Delight and Harry Cobden took up the lead as soon as the starter dropped his flag with Megan Nicholls on Angelic giving chase with the remainder snapping at their heels.  The ground was very soft with no one being able to make up any ground so Ninfield Millionaires Delight & Harry Cobden went on to win with Megan Nicholls on Angelic 2nd and Hattie Heal on Merryment Topcat 3rd.  With the soft ground, some of the 138 ponies found it a long way.

In the 148 we had Jack Sparrow out in front with the other 2 giving chase, but they couldn't catch him and he ended up the winner with Lucy Gould on Second Chance IV 2nd and Ben Price on Frantic Fox 3rd.

Luckily the sun came out for the races and prize giving but we did have some very muddy jockeys!

Report

Unfortunately we had very few entries in both races but it was good to see entries from out of our area.

In the 138 race Wee Anthony and Sophie Hodges took up the running near to home with Coveham Generation ridden by George Crate trying to get on terms but he could only manage 2nd with Hattie Heal on Milly, trying her hardest to pass George Crate, coming in 3rd. It was a 5 furlong race with a head wind so the ponies were quite tired when they finished.

In the 148 race the distance was 8 furlongs so the ponies needed to be fit bearing in mind they also had a head wind.  Unfortunately Come On Josey was withdrawn at the start so we only had 3 runners with James Hughes on Tarka II and Mick The Miller vying for 1st place coming up the home straight with Tarka II coming in 1st, Lucy Gould on Mick The Miller 2nd and Alice Elgar on Albert 3rd.  Although we only had a few entries  everyone enjoyed themselves.

Report

The day started with a cool mist but fortunately by the time racing started the mist had gone, both races were maidens so the ponies can't have won a race.

In the 138cm race we had 4 riders who had never ridden in a race before so it was lovely to see Florence, Hamish, Emma and Sadie enjoying their rides. The race was won by William Cox on Diptford Moonwalker, a pony who had been racing for two seasons but who had never won a race before, with Hattie Heal on her new ride Merryment Topcat second and Laura Thomas on Calelvador Shamio third.

In the 148 race we had some experienced riders on their new rides with a good race in prospect.  Unfortunately we had 3 non-runners - poor Lucy Mager and Ben Price had lame ponies but this didn't spoil the quality of the race which was won by Harry Cobden on Calypso with Hannah Welch with Vadlawalkover second and Lucy Gould on Second Chance IV third. We were treated to two excellent races with all the young riders and ponies finishing the races with big smiles on their faces.

Report

We started the Wessex season with two very good races on the card at Blackmore & Sparkford Vale on Sunday.

With 9 declarations in the 148 race and 7 declared in the 138 race expectations were high. We were not disappointed, in the 148 race we had some very good ponies entered with 5 first time runners. The race was won by Ollie Sangster on Billie Jean with Hugo Hunt on Jack Sparrow second, Bryony Frost on Missoopsadaisy third, and Vicky Merriman on Qwertyiuop fourth.

In the 138 race we also had some very good ponies declared with 3 new participants, the finish for this race was very exciting with three runners vying for first place. The winner by a head was Harry Cobden on Ninfield Millionaires Delight with Sophie Hodges on Wee Anthony second, Megan Nicholls on Angelic third and William Cox on Diptford Moonwalker fourth.
